ADHD Education & Support

We can help you build the skills needed to improve on the areas that you find challenging. If you have goals you’d like to achieve but need some help reaching them, or even just to get started, we can help.

Our support helps you to look at where you are now, where you want to be and how you can get there.

As ADHD consultants, we focus on the biological aspects of ADHD in addressing the core symptoms and finding ways to overcome your challenges. We work together with you to learn how the symptoms of ADHD like attention issues, impulsivity and hyperactivity/restlessness affect your daily life and what skills and other practical strategies you can utilise to initiate change.

We provide information and education about ADHD and your unique brain wiring which is essential when creating strategies to reach your goals.

By creating a safe and trusting relationship we can help you to recognise and acknowledge your strengths and positive qualities. This will help create positive energy and emotions for you and this emotional boost is extremely beneficial in tackling and being successful in achieving your goals and moving your life forward with positivity.

Sometimes you don’t have any specific goals that you want to achieve, or you are not ready for the pressure of achieving goals in a specific time-frame, perhaps you just want to chat with someone who understands, a professional who has experience and training in ADHD so truly ‘gets you’. Someone who can give you guidance, help with a different perspective or will listen to you and your challenges without judgement.

We provide ADHD education and support in person or via Telehealth (see our Telehealth section for more info) to support you in reaching your goals or to improve your skills and/or understanding in a variety of areas, such as: motivation, procrastination, productivity, relationships, sleep issues and time management, just to name a few!

If this sounds like you, then our ADHD education and support service may be perfect for you.

Goal related sessions are usually based on checking your progress for the previous week’s goals. They are also used to reflect on what worked well and what didn’t work so well. From this information, we can develop a step-by-step plan for identifying and achieving the next week’s goals.

It starts with an initial session to discuss:

  • Your needs & expectations
  • Fees and payments
  • Length of time for the agreement and the budget

The remaining sessions will include:

  • Supporting you by providing encouragement, feedback and practical suggestions.
  • Ensuring you are following through on your goals.
  • Participating in regular meetings and check-ins if required to discuss progress.
  • Keeping track of what steps you have taken towards your goals and when the remaining steps will be complete.
  • We may offer reminders or suggest time management methods to help progress.
  • Evaluating the impact of your plan

Dementia Support & Education

As we age, it’s normal to lose some neurons in the brain. People living with dementia, however, experience far greater loss. Many neurons stop working, lose connections with other brain cells, and eventually die. At first, symptoms can be mild, but they get worse over time.

My Care Specialist travels the journey alongside people diagnosed with dementia and their
loved ones providing support and guidance with navigating the pathway from diagnosis to the end stages of the disease. We focus on both the person diagnosed with dementia as well as their loved ones / carers.

We have specific skills in the areas of complex systems navigation such as My Aged Care and
the NDIS, advocacy, counselling, community participation and connecting people to the
supports and services they need to enhance their quality of life.

We understand that life is about living, not just existing and are passionate about ensuring you live a life of choice, connection and have the opportunity to enjoy the things that are
most important to you.

Having a thorough knowledge and understanding of what local services and resources are available within the community enable us to help link you with and gain access to any relevant supports in your community. Utilising these resources in addition to your government funding such as My Aged Care or NDIS will help you to enhance the quantity and quality
of support you receive.

What is Dementia?

Dementia is an umbrella term used to describe a range of neurological conditions affecting the brain that get worse over time.

Dementia is a condition that affects a person’s thinking, their behaviour and their ability to perform everyday tasks.

There are more than 100 different causes of dementia.

Dementia is more common in older people, although people under 65 can develop ‘younger onset’ dementia.

Understanding Different Types of Dementia

Symptoms can be similar among different types of dementia, and some people have more than one form of dementia, which can make an accurate diagnosis difficult. Symptoms can also vary from person to person. Doctors may ask for a medical history, complete a physical exam, and order neurological and laboratory tests to help diagnose dementia.

Types of Dementia

Alzheimer’s Disease – Frontotemporal Dementia – Lewy Body Dementia – Vascular Dementia

Below is a chart that describes what’s happening in the brain, the symptoms, the typical age of diagnosis, diagnosis, and treatment of four types of dementia.

Aromatherapy

Essential oils can be beneficial in so many ways and have been used for over a thousand years. In the Middle Ages, it was believed that essential oils were essential for life which is how they got their name and it continues even to this day.

Our sense of smell is connected to the limbic system, which is the part of the brain that influences behaviour, emotions and memory. Every time we inhale an essential oil, the limbic system is activated, and the brain responds by sending chemical messages to our nervous system, which initiates an emotional response.

Aromatherapy is becoming increasingly more popular as a standalone support as well as complimenting other therapies and can assist us in an immense number of ways throughout our daily lives.

Studies have shown that essential oils may help:

We use and recommend My Essential Collection products as their essential oil blends are made from organic, 100% pure & natural ingredients sourced from Australian-owned, cruelty-free and vegan-friendly companies.

My Essential Collection also supports small and local businesses wherever possible!

Relaxation / Mindfulness / Stress Management

Relaxation techniques can reduce stress symptoms and help you enjoy a better quality of life, especially if you have an illness.

Relaxation techniques are a great way to help with stress management. Relaxation isn’t only about peace of mind or enjoying some leisure time such as a hobby. It’s a process that decreases the stress effects on your mind and body.

Relaxation techniques can help you cope with everyday stress as well as long-term stress and even the stress created by health issues.

Mindfulness is a wonderful tool when it comes to relaxation. Practicing mindfulness can calm the mind and help you become more resilient against stress. This helps greatly with relaxation, which has the primary goal of calming your mind and body and lowering stress levels.

When it comes to mindfulness and meditation, the goal for most of us is simple, we want to calm down and relax. Unfortunately, mindfulness doesn’t always seem relaxing as the main focus of mindfulness is to build awareness, not helping us to feel relaxed. There are however a number of relaxation techniques based on mindfulness.

“Mindfulness helps us see clearly so we can make wise choices and respond to life effectively.” Dr. Shauna Shapiro

To help get the most benefit, it’s always a good idea to combine a few tools together.
Try utilising relaxation techniques together with other positive coping methods, such as:

We would like to reiterate that if you can’t see the support you need, please contact us and we’ll let you know if we can help.

If we don’t provide the support ourselves, we will assist you to find the people who do.

“We are the sum total of our experiences. Those experiences – be they positive or negative – make us the person we are, at any given point in our lives. And, like a flowing river, those same experiences, and those yet to come, continue to influence and reshape the person we are, and the person we become. None of us are the same as we were yesterday, nor will be tomorrow.”
